Unique and Fun Engagement Session Ideas

A lot of couples come to me with a multitude of questions about their engagement sessions. Particularly, about how to make it fun and a non-awkward experience. For example, here are some questions I get, “We are awkward in front of the camera, how do we make this less uncomfortable?”, or “Should we bring props to make it more interesting?”, or “How can we make this shoot feel the most like ‘us’?”.
My answer to those questions is, well, what do you guys like to do together for fun? Do you enjoy sitting at coffee shops, going to the lake in the summer, hiking, biking, or skateboarding? If you love going to record stores, then let’s go find a rad record store and do at least half of your session there to get us started. The other half can be at a park or whatever, but at least half of it will show what makes you two, you.
I have found that when my couples start out their engagement session with something fun that they already enjoy doing, they are 10x more natural in front of my lens! And usually by the end of it, they have forgotten all about my camera. Another perk to doing fun things for your session is it makes your photos stand out from the stereotypical engagement photos. People will love seeing your save the date with your super unique and personalized photo(s) on it.
Here are some super fun examples of unique engagement sessions. They are some of my very favorites I’ve ever done!!
*Head to a coffee shop! Coffee is always a great accessory.
*Similar to coffee… where my beer drinkers at?! Breweries are a super fun and relaxed environment, especially after a few bevvies 😉
*Water activities are totally my jam and I’m not afraid to get a little wet if you aren’t! For those of you that grew up going to the lake, this might be just the thing for you. You can start a little more formal, and end the evening drenched and skipping around with your love.
*MAJOR DEAR JOHN VIBES! Who wouldn’t want to have a picnic on the beach tbh? These were taken in Charleston, SC so if that is too far from where you are or you don’t have an ocean, most lakes have a “beach” and we can make it look amazing! Again, we can end up swimming, skipping, or whatever you like to do at the beach.
*In home sessions are ideal for people who live somewhere cold (like Columbus in the winter) and don’t wanna freeze during their session. In-homes are also super fun and intimate cause you are just chillin at your house like any normal day.. except I’ll be there.
*Sports, ya know?
*Pool Partyyyy!!! So much you can do with this to make it so fun!
*Methods of transportation can be super fun and different, especially if it’s something you guys actually enjoy doing together! Bikes, skateboards, even your Jeep can be fun distractions from being nervous about the camera. And you’ll look dope while doing it.
*DOGS!! Need I say more?
*Last but not least, hammocking!!! All you have to do is lay there and BAM! Magic is made.
I really hope this helps inspire you to think outside the box when it comes to planning your engagement session! These don’t have to be stiff, they can be fun and full of activities that make you feel giddy. Hit me up if you want to take me along to capture these memories for you.
